• So far these forums have been incredible helpful as I get my personal blog going. The intent right now with my site isn’t really to get a huge number of visitors but just to blog about life & maybe post interesting or helpful ideas, links, videos, etc. that my friends, family, and twitter followers might like.

My blog has been through about 10 theme changes over the past year, and I think I’ve finally found one I’m happy with, though I do plan a few tweaks here or there later on. For now I’m looking for suggestions on what elements/widgets to place in the footer, which is basically acting as my “sidebar.”

You can ignore everything in it right now, especially the lame “About Me” blurb… butlet me know what might be useful to increase the ease of navigation for users. Are showing a list of tags necessary? The blogroll is on my links page, so does it need to be in the footer? Any suggestions would be great!!!

  • really nice site))) I mean it doesn’t look like all other sites) That’s what I really like. Clean, fresh)
as for your Qs, I think showing a list of tags is not necessary at all.
If you have blog roll in the footer that might be easier for your users….but it’s not indispenable)
I would personally make a footer smaller, there’s a lot of unused space)
Also, I think you should have sidebars…..take a lokk at these WordPress Theme“>
but if you strongly do not want them, just leave it as it is.

olko-polko, the link you supplied doesn’t seem to be working. If you could post it again, that would be great!

Anyone else have any suggestions on what I could add to my footer?

Great design. I love the clean, simple look. Very readable.

As for what you could add to the footer, it seems that you don’t have a list of categories or recent posts anywhere, so those two might be good candidates. You might also toss in a widget with recent comments.

I notice that overall, your blog navigation is bottom-heavy–your tags are at the bottom of the page, and when I’m on a single post page, there’s no easy way to navigate through your blog. You also don’t link to category listings except from each post’s own categories. So if I want to browse your blog topically rather than chronologically, it’s somewhat awkward.

Hope this helps. Looks great, just needs a little tweaking to make it more easily navigable.

    sorry, here’s the link again)))

The recent posts, I’ll definitely look into. As far as the categories go, they are all listed in the Archives section… which for simplicity & organization purposes is where I think they belong.

Tags in general I have a problem with. I never really know how I should be tagging posts, someone told me once I use too many of them. Plus, I really think the tag cloud just looks awful. I like the idea of it, but I just think it clashes for the simple, clean look I’m going for. Any advice?

This is what I’m thinking so far:

    Recent Posts || Search/RSS/Social Web Profiles || ??? (Calendar as a placeholder)

Something that came with the template I’m using is that the footer only shows up on the main page, so everything above doesn’t appear on posts or pages (except Archives page & archives lists). Is this a problem I should fix? I kind of like the simplicity of it only showing up on the main site.

Keep the ideas & opinions coming. The help has been great so far!

If you desire to have the tags, remember that you do not have to have all of them. You could limit the display in the footer to the top 10 tags. I am also a fan of having the top tags prominently displayed in a cloud but also having a link to a custom page with all of the tags (tag storm?).

I have a tag cloud in the sidebar of my wife’s site (https://buyandsellwithshannon.com/blog/) but a link to the “tag storm” (https://buyandsellwithshannon.com/tagstorm/). this is helpful if there are lots of tags . Over time she has about 1,500.

remember, that footer section is valuable real estate, especially if there is no sidebar. I like the idea of a recent posts or something like that.
