Before just a few moments ago, my footer widgets were working great. I have a custom widget in footer 1, 2 and 3 and they were appearing horizontally. Now they appear vertically. I verified each widget was placed in each footer correctly, and then even switched them around, but same vertical result. Why is this so touchy? This is the 3rd time I’ve had this problem but can’t remember how it was fixed, or it just fixed itself. I followed instructions from support on creating a 4th footer level which isn’t being used now because it wouldn’t show my 4th widget. My site is https://roundhousetalk.com

Re-upload a fresh, unpacked, copy of the Twenty Eleven folder to wp-content/themes using FTP or whatever file management application your host provides.

Ok. Did that, but there is no change. I looked at my footer widgets and they are set up just like they were when they were working correctly horizontally but still showing vertically after the download and upload into the themes directory.

Try sorting out the 99 markup errors on your site. Your front page is full of unclosed and mis-nested markup elements – presumably from the content you have added to the page.

I’m sorry Esmi, but I am still too new to this. How do I find those errors and correct? I am trying hard to understand and simplify my efforts. Thanks.

You need to look in the content you added to the front page. Did you paste this in from somewhere else?

The only thing really pasted in was some excerpts from the original article. How can you identify a 99 error looking at the html for the page? I can delete out the pasted content and just put a link with my own description of the article if that works. A little more work but sure not what I’m doing now. I am instructing a training next Monday-Wednesday and I have been working probably too hard to get it near perfect to go over as part of my class for resource information. Is it very time consuming to just purchase a theme and move content and plugins needed over to it?

Do you still have access to that original article?

How can you identify a 99 error looking at the html for the page?

I didn’t. The W3C HTML validator did – if you check the link that I posted above.

No. You don’t need to move any content or plugin to use a new theme. Just install and activate it. But it won’t fix any markup errors in the content of your pages.

Ok. I will first try to go line by line and see if anything looks wrong. Then see what happens. Do that right now and then let you know.

in Firefox16, right now, I see 3 footer widget sections (aligned side-by-side), with two widgets in the middle one.
and that is the same for the front page and single posts.

you might need to clear your browser cache (for example by pressing ‘CTRL F5’ or whatever your browser needs).

Problem resolved. Cleaned up html and it now functions properly. Accidentally closed out the other part of the problem. Background color from white to black for the footer and the background of the widgets. How can I change this?
