Did you update to version 3? This is not compatible with PHP 8.2, if that could be the issue here.

    Yes, I have Version 3.0.

I see we are running PHP 7.4. with version 3.0. So that can’t be the culprit.

    Thanks for confirming.

As per the announcement, the code has been rolled back to how it was a few months back. If you’re making use of recent changes, that may be the issue. Please check the plugin instructions to see if you’re implementing the footnotes according to that.

When I updated to version 3, footnotes ceased to display on my site, too. I’m posting my solution here in case it helps anyone else (I know @stephencactus was having the same problem in a now-locked thread).

In the Settings > Footnotes change the Priority number to something lower (mine was set to 11).

Hope that resolves the issue for you!

Ah, brilliant, brit77. Thanks for that. I set it to 5 and it works again.

David… see temporary fix above. Also, I read about what happened with the other developer. Thanks for taking this over again. You’re now the ONLY plugin aside from Civil Footnotes using the double-bracket (which is also the simplest method, but yours is the cleanest plugin). So, it would be terrible if this plugin went under (as it would mean having to go back through hundreds of posts and removing or changing the brackets!).

Yay! Glad it worked for you, @mmallett! I was panicking at first and rolled back to 2.5 (I hope it is safe to stick with that for now), but I tested 3.0 on a local installation and found this solution. I do not look forward to having to replace this plugin. ??

It worked well on one site… kind of worked on another (the popup footnote is mostly faded out). But it sounds like David is on it. Thanks again!

Thanks to David and others who have helped to resolve this issue today. I have changed the priority to 5 and the plugin is now working again on my website.

I’m assuming this resolves the issue in the short term – but does anyone know if in the medium term we all need to find alternatives? I find this plugin great and easy to use, and the alternatives all seem poorer in at least one functionality.

    Thanks again

It was broken for me too. I noticed that the “Begin a footnote” and “End a footnote” settings had reverted(?) to double brackets (( and )). I returned them to what we’ve been using – [ref] and [/ref] and all seems well again.
