    Hi,

A user has uploaded several files (MS Word, MS Excel…) to a page, for others to download, but when clicking on the link (or pasting the URL of the file into the address bar) for some of the files we are getting a message which reads “Forbidden. You do not have permission to access /wp-content/uploads/2016/10/filename.xlsx on this server.”

Other files uploaded to the same page are fine and there’s no forbidden message.

In this particular instance there is a Word doc and an Excel spreadsheet. We have the error with the Excel file but not with the Word file. However, previously the same problem has occured with a Word doc.

In the current instance, the files were uploaded to the same page within minutes of each other, and are both in the same directory on the server. I’ve checked the permissions of the files on the server and they are exactly the same.

The page they are uploaded to is a password protected page.

Any advice or assistance would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jason.

    The Mother of Code

    Hi Jason,

Can you please make sure that this is not a plugin or theme issue? It sounds like there’s a function preventing access to certain downloads.

The best way to determine if the issue is being caused by a theme and/or plugin is to do the following:

    1. Temporarily switch your theme back to the WordPress Twenty Sixteen Theme
    2. Disable all plugins
    3. Test to see if the issue has been resolved.
    4. If that resolves the issue, then slowly re-enable features until you find the one that’s causing the conflict.

    Hope that helps!
