Force icon beside text on single line?

With my active theme (Nirvana), every menu icon appears on top of the text instead of neatly besides it on a single line. This messes up the height of my menu bar as you can see in the screenshot:

How to force menu icons & text side by side on a single line?
I realize this is most likely an abnormality with the theme since it does some fancy stuff with the menu bar like hovers and auto restyle to hamburger menu when the browser width is limited.
Already tried adding several custom CSS properties for .menu like white-space: nowrap, overflow: hidden. Sadly to no avail, so now I only used it for the Home menu-item with the label text removed as you can see in my live production site on van-zand.com.
