I have a weird question: Since updating to WordPress 5.8 yesterday, when I edit posts or pages, the editor keeps trying to default to the Visual Editor — opening a post or page for editing now opens in Visual, and even if I switch to Text, it switches back by itself as soon as I save, which is frustrating. It didn’t do this prior to the 5.8 update, so I’m fearing this behavior is the result of some asinine block editor change spilling over onto the Classic Editor.

Is there a way to control the Classic Editor default view so that it will default to text? (I prefer to mostly edit in text mode so that I can manage HTML markup, since I don’t really trust the WYSIWYG editor to do that properly, especially with regard to CSS.)

Thanks! (And, as an unrelated tangent, thanks for updating the plugin to allow classic Widgets — you saved me so many headaches tonight.)

The only thing I can think of is the WP setting under Users > Profile > “Visual Editor”. If that is enabled, the Visual Editor always will be displayed when you visit the edit screen. It’s not something that DG has any control over.

Hmm — looking at that option, it appears it works the other way around: The checkbox on the Profile page says “Disable the visual editor when writing.” With that checked, the visual editor tab is completely removed from the editor screen. I guess that is a possibility, although it doesn’t seem to be responsible for the odd behavior I’m experiencing. (I can switch to the text editor if it’s not displayed, but the edit interface keeps switching back on opening or saving a post, whether I tell it to or not.) Very odd.

It may be that something (like a plugin or theme) is interfering with normal WP functionality. Best advice would be to do some basic troubleshooting of your site. I would be glad to provide a guide if it will be useful for you.

Hmm — it was not doing this on Monday, and the only thing that’s changed since then is the WordPress 5.8 update (and this is happening across sites with different themes), so I’m guessing it’s some kind of quirk in the latest update, like the disappearing editor issue. Thanks for your input!

Yeah that could be it, will keep an eye on it. Let me know if any further clues, and/or if I can provide any further infos about the plugin. Thank you, @ate-up-with-motor.

Will do. Thanks again — everything about the latest update has been a “Oh, no, what is it doing NOW affair?”
