I got an email from Google Search Console this morning saying that someone else has been verified as an owner of my website.

This person managed to add a meta tag to my website and I can’t find where it is. I see it in the source code as a part of the Rank Math SEO chunk of code but when I search in header.php and the Rank Math code itself I don’t see the tag.

Please help me locate and remove this! I can’t remove them as an owner of my website from Google Search Console until I remove this tag.

Hi @parms, thanks for getting in touch.

This may not be part of a breach of your site as Rank Math SEO allows site ownership verification as part of its feature set. Do you see any suspicious files as part of a full Wordfence scan?

If not, I would check in with Rank Math SEO’s support channels first with the exact meta tag being added and any other precise messages, emails, times or anything else that may be relevant to see if they’re aware of the behavior and can either assist you in removing the verification or assuring you the meta tag you’re seeing is normal.

If they or our scan confirm any unusual activity and you need further assistance by all means get back to me here so we can look further into it for you.

    Thanks,

    Peter.

    Hi @wfpeter,

I spoke with someone on the Rank Math team, he told me where to find the tag and said that the only way someone could’ve accessed that part of my site is by logging in and adding the tag.

I did see some suspicious files in my last Wordfence scan (which I’ve since deleted), but those didn’t seem to have anything to do with the tag on my site. I’ve also removed all extra admin accounts and will be changing my own password once I’m done with an open support request I have.

Thank you for responding. I will follow up if it happens again.
