I want to keep using 2.3.5 on all my sites but am worried it might need work down the road to stay compatible with the latest versions of WordPress. Would anyone with tech chops be willing to create and maintain a fork? Would be quite popular I imagine.

Version 3 is a huge step backwards from 2 in my opinion. The realtime analysis adds loads of weight to pages – and I don’t need it. The ‘snippet editor’ is just a gimmick. I prefer the old meta description box. And all the onpage.org stuff – unnecessary. Oh, and the UX sucks big time.
