Format and Spacing Problems
-
I just transferred my blog from Blogger to WordPress. The formatting on all of my Blogger posts is off–too many or too few spaces between text and photographs. When I try to “fix” the problem any changes I make in edit will not save to the post. I’m having the same problem with new posts. I don’t know anything about coding, so I hope the problem can be fixed some other way.
Here’s a link to an “old” post with formatting issues: https://adirondackgirlatheart.com/2015/06/revamped-personalized.html
Thanks,
Diana

Hi Diana,
Formatting issues can be a bit subjective at time, so can you please be more specific about the issues you’re having? Where do you want more/less whitespace between text and images? To change your theme styling you might have to dig into the CSS a bit. You can’t just add a bunch of hard returns in the Editor to create more space – it’ll just strip them out. ??
Hi,
Thanks for the help. What I’m looking to do, format-wise, is have one space between my text and a photo (top and bottom).
By hard return, do you mean when I push enter?
After some research, I discovered the shift-enter, which has helped me type new posts, though I find it inconsistent. I’m constantly having to go to preview. It seems ridiculously over-complicated, and I find it hard to believe there isn’t an easier way.
Regarding my old posts, nothing I do, hard returns or shift-returns will change the formatting. I also find it hard to believe that I will have to live with 500 poorly formatted posts. There’s got to be an answer, right?
I’m hoping you have that answer ??
Thanks again for taking the time to help.
Hi Diana,
I looked at your blog and the new posts look okay to me, it’s just the old posts that are causing the problem – correct? When you migrated your posts, did you use a particular plugin and uncheck preserve formatting? It looks like the blogger html tags and old CSS classes are messing things up. We can still work with that, I can give you a piece of CSS that should help out – are you comfortable with that? Also, I noticed that your old blog post images are pointing to your blogger URLs. If/when you close your blogger account down, the links to these images will be broken and will not show up. When you migrated you might not have chosen to move your media across too. Just FYI.
BTW, welcome to WordPress ?? things will get easier!
Hi Mork,
Thanks so much for helping me. Yes, it’s just the old posts.
I hired someone to do the transfer for me, so I’m not sure what she may have done as far as unchecking “preserve formatting.” She knows I am very frustrated about the formatting of the old posts and has been trying to help me, but she does not seem to understand what I’m talking about regarding formatting (though I’ve sent her screen shots and explained in detail).
I think if you gave me the piece of code and where to put it, I could send that to her and she could do it for me.
I did add to my code a few times in Blogger, but I was very comfortable there. Everything seems terrible and awkward here in WordPress Land. Your welcome and “promise” that things will get easier were a tremendous blessing to me when I read them ?? Thank you.
Regarding my old blog post images pointing to my Blogger URLS, she had to do that because many of my photos would not transfer to WordPress. She said that was because “Blogger had attached something to the files that prevented them from being transferred.” As a result, she said I could never close my Blogger account. I’m hoping that doesn’t cause me problems in the future :/
Thanks again, Mork, for all your help–you’re a peach–
DianaHey Diana,
Thanks so much for your kind words.:-) I remember when I didn’t know the difference between a page and a post… hey we all start somewhere!
Question for you: Do you have any of the old post images in your media gallery at all? I’m wondering if just the links haven’t changed over or if the image files didn’t migrate at all. There is a process for whatever your answer is, of course. ??
Do you have Jetpack installed? If you do, please make sure you have the custom CSS module on the Jetpack dashboard. If not, I’ll give you different instructions for putting the CSS into your child theme.
Cheers!
Yes, there are a bunch of old post images, but there are hundreds and hundreds that are not in my media file. Here’s one: https://adirondackgirlatheart.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/vintage-green-basket-with-lemons-500×481-cover.jpg
I was planning on installing Jetpack, but was going to wait until things are working properly. So, no, I don’t have Jetpack.
Thanks again
P.S. I can install Jetpack now if you recommend that.
Hi Diana,
If you install Jetpack, you should be able to put the snippet of CSS in place yourself. Faster that way perhaps? So, after you’ve got Jetpack up and running and the CSS module installed here’s what you do:
Appearance > Edit CSS
You will find a blank stylesheet. Under the comment at the top, copy/paste this:
.separator { padding: 25px 0; }
That’s it! See if that makes a difference in the old posts. If it does and you want more of less whitespace, just play with the 25px and see what you prefer. If you have problems (sometimes it’s hard for me to see if anything might conflict from where I’m sitting), just let me know!
Re Jetpack: Has tons of goodies, but only activate the ones you want to use. (Site stats is a great one)
Cheers ??
Hi Linda,
I installed Jetpack and inserted the code you sent me, modified the 25 to 5 and it worked pretty well!!!
By and large my old posts look pretty good, with the spacing in the body of the post nearly perfect and then usually some problems at the end where I have lots of centered info (thumbnails to click on, features, my social media, and my signature). But now it’s allowing me to make edits that [mostly] fix the spacing problems. I will make them post by post as I am able. (I’ll take any further suggestions, if you have any!)
Thanks so much for all your help. I’m feeling much better now about WordPress. I got my photo “problem” fixed and my page views are creeping up closer to what they used to be, and now, with your help, the blog posts look better.
Thank you again!
DianaHi Diana,
So glad you’ve got your blog looking more the way you want and you’re feeling a bit more at home with WordPress, that’s awesome! Happy to help out.
Cheers!
I made the Blogger to WordPress migration nearly a year ago and faced similar formatting issues with my text spacing and my photo formatting.
Over the course of the year, I have been manually fixing posts little by little. I would really love to get them all fixed and finally be done with it. Maybe you could help me Linda?
Here is a link to a Blogger post as an example of the formatting issues I am referring to: https://www.faithfamilyandbeef.com/2014/04/share-the-dream.html
And here is a link to a more recent post for an example of what I am going for: https://www.faithfamilyandbeef.com/2016/01/diary-of-a-recovering-food-waster-part-2.html
I am hoping it is not too late and there is a quicker/easier fix than going in and manually fixing them all.
Thanks in advance!
