Formatting of Excerpt Stripped?

I have quite a bit of formatting in my excerpts (divs, spans etc) but they are all stripped when I use the include_excerpt=”true” function.

It looks like they are displayed in a <span class=”excerpt”> and all of my formatting is then gone.

Any idea how to fix this and get my formatting back? Perhaps by putting the excerpt into a div instead of a span?
