After watching the preview of Pagelines DMS and viewing the new pricing structure, I’m not sure the next incarnation of Pagelines will work for a site I currently use it in…

One of my projects uses Pagelines on a multisite install. We like the custom sections we’ve built, but don’t need all the bells and whistles of DMS and would rather not pay year round for support, as we really don’t need it, and we certainly don’t need to pay top line developer costs just to be able to continue with one tiny multisite project.

So, which of the other frameworks out there support user generated custom sections in a manner similar to Pagelines? We’ve modded up all kinds of weird combinations of boxes, banners, galleries, nav bars, and smushed in some custom sections as well, and would like to (relatively) maintain the visual appearance of the site even with a transition to another framework.

I don’t mind (well, too much) having to re-code custom sections, but we’d like to stick with a modular approach to individual pages with large flexibility in layout/design on a per type (rather than per individual) basis, if possible.

I’ve googled up a bunch of comparisons of frameworks, but haven’t found an adequate mention of the specific section-oriented customization issue…

    Thanks for your advice!

  • Hey there,

All current PageLines Plus customers will be grandfathered into the new system. If you’re using PageLines Framework 2.x you won’t have to pay anything more and you keep your license for what you’ve got. With DMS you can download it for free and you’ll never have to pay an ongoing fee for it if you don’t want to. You can download it right on GitHub.

Not sure that answers your question but if the issue is PageLines pricing, hopefully that helps you ‘stick with it’. You can always send a message to the team at PageLines too if you need any more clarification.

From the DMS site (emphasis mine)

“Does my site break if I stop paying?
No! What happens is you lose access to your professional-only editing tools and effects, the ability to add and edit Professional sections, and a credit link will be subtly added back to your site. Nothing functionality, layout or otherwise will change. We don’t mess with sites!”

What this says to me: if we pay, use the tools (incl. a couple of professional bits) to set up our site using DMS to look exactly like the current site does under PageLines, and then we stop paying because this is a lot of money to pay if you don’t need support, we won’t be able to edit our existing professional sections and we’ll get a credit link added to our site. Which means — we’d need to keep paying. forever. b/c its a multisite, we have to pay the top developer price plan.

I have no problem with PageLines — I fully understand that my orgs niche use of their product isn’t really consistent with their business model. That is okay. I just want to know what my alternatives are.

There is no reason why you can’t stick with the pagelines version you are using currently, if you are happy with it no need to change.

You can also build great sites in the new open source DMS – without the bells and whistles of the subscription options. Sounds like you already know how to customise so it will be easy for you.

Have you tried the open source DMS yet?

I just want to know what other frameworks are out there so that I can go to my supervisor and say: “We have these X options for addressing our website looking 18 to 36 months into the future. These are the pros and cons of each. This is how we can approach keeping our site and all functionality compatible with WordPress upgrades in the future.”

I asked my original on www.ads-software.com and not the PageLines support forum because I want to know about options that are alternatives to PageLines new DMS, so if anyone can answer my original question, I would be most appreciative. Which of the other frameworks out there support user generated custom sections?

    Thank you for your responses,

Try googling on this. We do not have access to any special tools or additional information that you do not.

I guess I shouldn’t have assumed that people reading the “Theme and Template” forum would have ever used any of the other paid theme frameworks out there other than PageLines? I apologize for wasting people’s time and posting off topic. Very sorry.

Thanks for your help and insight.

The www.ads-software.com support forums are meant for the core application, themes and plugins that are distributed on www.ads-software.com. We do not support themes downloaded from elsewhere.

I take on board esmi’s comment and this probably isn’t the best place to talk about themes distributed outside of www.ads-software.com.

I’m in the same boat as you R.R. and can’t justify paying a rental fee for the new version of Pagelines Plus (rebranded as DMS). I can’t see a way to PM you through this forum but if you ever found an alternative place to discuss this topic then ti would be great if you could share it!
