I have installed what I thought was the Wordfence free version but I can’t use it without a license. I have used the free version on other websites but didn’t have this problem

Hey I ran into this just moments ago as well. I got it working but I had to:
    1. create an account o Wordfence website
    2. Register the website URL with the Wordfence website
    3. Then once back in my website admin under the wordfence plugin click “Resume Installation” > Get Wordfence License> Get a Free License > I’m OK waiting 30……> Enter your email and register> that emails the free license to you.

So many extra steps for them to try to sell you the upgrade ?? cleaver really.

    Hi @decwodie,

    Thank you for reaching out.

The process of acquiring free license keys changed itself that’s changed a while back. Existing free site keys created before the change were not affected.

This is because we could not adequately track the number of sites using Wordfence beyond the download numbers on www.ads-software.com. So this isn’t a very good way to plan for the future and ensure we have the bandwidth and servers available to keep providing the plugin and the services it provides for free and paid users.?

The steps shared by @bldesignbp should get you a free license key. It will be sent to your email.

Let me know how it goes.

    Thanks,

    Janet.
