• Bonjour ! Hello !

Contexte : 2 blogs devenus inaccessibles depuis environ un an. Ils me servent d’archives, je me connecte très peu et ne m’en occupe pas.
Hébergement chez OVH, qui dit ne pas pouvoir m’aider.

Context : 2 blogs which became inaccessible about 1 year ago. I use them as archive, I rarely connect and haven’t really taken care of them for a few years.
Hosted with OVH – they say they can’t help me with this issue.

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING, expecting T_OLD_FUNCTION or T_FUNCTION or T_VAR or ‘}’ in /home/lestoilew/le-cirque-de-la-puce/wp-includes/locale.php on line 21
(I get the same message for the other blog : Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING, expecting T_OLD_FUNCTION or T_FUNCTION or T_VAR or ‘}’ in /home/lestoilew/sur-les-chemins/wp-includes/locale.php on line 21)

Same problem (different message) if I want to access the domain manager : Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_OBJECT_OPERATOR in /home/lestoilew/www/wp-admin/index.php on line 103

I also had the message : no MySQL…

Je n’ai aucune idée de ce que je dois / peux faire, je suis quand même plut?t une bille.
I have no idea what I must / can do, knowing I’m quite useless and hopeless at all these things…

    Merci !

  • Upgrade the version of PHP running on your server.

You’re running PHP 4.4.9, which is extremely old and not supported by WordPress.

    Thank you ??

So this is where I’ve reached my limits… When I sent a ticket to OVH about the problem, they told me they could not help, I had to see that with my webmaster. I don’t have a webmaster, I AM the webmaster (though obviously, I do not master much…).

If I need to update PHP through WordPress… well… I can’t access WP.

If I need to upgrade through OVH, I have no idea how to do that, and they won’t help.

So, via WP or via OVH ?

    Thank you again !

PHP is server software. WordPress requires PHP (the appropriate version, properly configured) to be on your server… but it’s not something provided by WordPress.

When I sent a ticket to OVH about the problem, they told me they could not help, I had to see that with my webmaster.

If you simply asked them to fix the problem on your website, of course, most hosts will say that’s not their job.

But asking for help to update PHP is a different thing altogether since PHP is server software and not part of your website.

But it also depends on the kind of hosting package you have.

If you have a shared hosting plan, then all server software (including PHP) is the host’s responsibility. You will not be able to install new version of PHP yourself at all, but there would likely be a feature in your control panel to choose between different pre-installed PHP versions.

But if you have a private server (VPS or Cloud VM or Dedicated), then ALL server software, including PHP, is your responsibility to update.

I’ll recommend you open a new ticket with your host, but this time specifically ask for help to update your PHP version from the current 4.4.9 to 7.4 or 8.x. They may either do it for you, or direct you to a support article you can follow to do it yourself.

If you’re on OVHCloud, here’s the relevant support article: https://help.ovhcloud.com/csm/en-ie-web-hosting-change-php-version

You are adorable, heartfelt THANK YOU for your time and your patience ?

I’ll try and reach out to OVH as soon as possible, and might come back with more details and to mark this thread as “solved”, so that it could help others.

Have a great week Sir ??
