You actually have two potential sources for content that *could* come into play here depending upon what has actually been downloaded. Hopefully you have a copy of your previous /wp-content/ folder where your uploads will have been stored…and moving from wordpress.com to self-hosted, you will not need or want anything else such as any plugins or themes that might be there.

The second piece of “content” you might have would be a copy of your previous database where all your pages and posts and such are stored, and that would need to be imported at your server via phpMyAdmin and then you would also need to add some of its details to wp-config.php to switch to that database that might or might not need some additional updating in order for WordPress to be able to find your /wp-content/ folder. However, I suspect what you actually have there is a Dashboard export of your content that would be imported at your Dashboard by using this plugin:

So, what do you get for foldernames and/or filenames when you unzip whatever you have?

I have been a little confused about if I could use the wordpress importer Versjon: 0.6.1. However, trying to import I get the answer that the file can not be uploaded.

As you say, my only content I get, Is the last one. When I unzip that file, I get a XML file with my content. Does that make any sense to you?

A database file would typically be an .sql file, so I believe what you have there should be what you need at the Dashboard. Did you unzip it before trying to import it? Also, that plugin has some options from which to choose at the time of use.

Yes, I have tried to unzip it before importing it, and I have tried to import it on wordpress platform (import->wordpress->install wordpress importer) – that is when I get the “failed” message. I also tried to install it on wp-content/plugin, and none of this works for me. It might just be that I do not get this at all. I mean, this technical stuff. However, if you have any suggestions for my further attempt, I am thankful!

If things were as easy as the link above described, I should be able to do it, I think, but somethings happen in step 2 that cut off the process.
I have downloaded the xml file, and tried importing it several times, but it is not working.

I’m a little bit demotivated after spending several days at this.

What happens – do you get any error messages?

Try exporting a small part of your content from WP.COM (i.e. limit it on the export options) – and see if that will work to upload. If not, ask your hosting company for help.

You could also pay for a guided transfer from WordPress.COM.

The problem is not the XML file it self.
Let me try to explain part by part referring to the import process:
1. I go to my selfhosted blog, and press import.
2. Going to the different importing systems, I press wordpress
3. The option coming up, is to install WordPress importer (Versjon: 0.6.1) Pressing this button, I get the following answer:
– Downloading instalation https://downloads.www.ads-software.com/plugin/wordpress-importer.0.6.1.zip
– Unpacking
– Installing
– Could not create folder (/customers/7/a/a/maryathomewriting.com/httpd.www/wp-content/plugins/wordpress-importer/)

Here, I come no further.

Try going to Plugins > Add New to first search for and add that plugin as a separate step.

Ask iPage for help with that – it’s on their server.

I get the same answer – could not create folder.

There is where you might want to ask your host what kind of blocking might be going on that is stopping you from installing WordPress plugins and importing content.

BTW, I wouldn’t give up just yet – these are solvable problems :)! I know it’s very frustrating – and there’s lot of new stuff to learn. But this is the kind of thing you will likely have to deal with when you have a self-hosted site. Not that it’s always this time consuming, but it is different from WordPress.COM.
