    Hello

I’ve been using Wp-KaTeX for years, and I’m wondering if it’s a good idea to move from the first plugin to the second.

    I don’t use blocks. Only code and shortcodes [latex]...[/latex] (I’m old-schooled).

What happens if the two plugins are active at the same time? Can I safely swap between the two plugins?

I won’t convert my [latex]...[/latex] into [katex]…[/klatex] (I know I can stay with the first syntax) because there too many (really) of them. For new posts, if I convert to Gutenberg, If will be able to use both syntaxes, right?

    Thanks for any suggestion

    Hi Jean-Michel,

Thank your for your interest in this plugin!

If you are not planning to use blocks, there won’t be a benefit by moving from WP-KaTeX to KaTeX.

If you do plan to move, I recommend making a backup of your installation first, just to be sure.

You can safely have both plugins installed at the same time. You might have some LaTeX rendering issues if both plugins are active, though. These issues should be resolved as soon as you deactivate one of the plugins.

When using this plugin, you can use both [latex] and [katex] shortcodes interchangeably, as well as the KaTeX Gutenberg blocks.

    Good luck making the decision!

    Hi Thomas,

Thank you (and congrats!) for such a quick and useful and conforting answer.

I’m really maniac about backups, so this is not an issue.

The Wp-Plugin was last updated 8 months ago, and is not tested with my wordpress version (and I’m still in 5.3 !).

I’m concerned about not being dependant to just one LaTeX plugin (this is vital for my website), in case this plugin becomes not supported (excuse my english mistakes, if any).

Being confined at home, I will be glad to make some experiments with your plugin, in the next days.

Thank you again, and take care.

PS: just another question… Are [katex]…[/katex] blocks only intended for displaystyle maths?

    Hi Jean-Michel,

I totally understand your reluctance to being dependent on a specific plugin. I also try to avoid such things.

To avoid dependence on my plugin as well, I’d recommend you to stick with [latex] shortcodes when using it, instead of [katex], as they're most widely supported. That would make it easiest to switch again in the future. Different plugins do tend to handle "display mode" differently, though (e.g. rendering [latex display=true]a^2 + b^2 = c^2[/latex] as a block instead of inline). Take special note of that.

Gutenberg blocks are not easily migrated from one plugin to another, so it would be best to avoid using them if you foresee switching away from this plugin.

If you encounter any issues using this plugin, please let me know by opening a new thread.

P.S. I did just notice an issue in this plugin with multi-line display-mode shortcodes ([latex display=true]), where HTML line breaks, <br>, literally make their way into the rendered LaTeX. I'll investigate soon and release a new version.

    Hello Thomas

I finally switched from WP-KaTeX to KaTeX, and it worked like a charm! zero effort. I’m glad I can rely on your plugin, and I hope you will have enough time and motivation to maintain it.
If one day you decide your plugin deserves some kind of donation, count me in.

Thank you for providing KaTeX to us.
