FTP client/viewing directories

  • Hi all,
    New to wordpress.

    Recently was given access to our server on which we have wordpress installed. I have been trying to upload a new theme for a while.
    Was told that I should do it through an FTP client. I am using Total Commander.
    When I connect to the server and the wordpress site, however, I cannot see any files. There is no “wp-admin” file, and no directories of any kind.

    Currently, everything I move to this wordpress site shows up in media. So if I move a theme zip file, it shows up in media as a zip file. Not helpful.

    I have had some success installing themes the regular way, but get stuck with the cheatin’ error. All the fixes for this error require me to have access to the wordpress directories…so it’s kind of a catch-22.
    Any guidance would be appreciated…
    edit: not sure what happened, but am also now getting this error: “Unable to locate WordPress Content directory (wp-content).”

    //Also, please note: am newbie regarding programming, but am willing to research, and have access to a smart IT person (but he lives far far away, and is difficult to contact–hence why I am on this forum).

  • Most likely you have been given access to a restricted FTP login which maps to your media directory, this would be tolerable if you were solely a content creator, even a good idea and best practice, but for a real WordPress site administrator this is hopeless. You need to get back to the website administrator and get access to the full website management (probably cPanel), if they can’t (or won’t) give you this then you need full FTP access and also access to “phpmyadmin” so that you can manage your website database.
