Hi, I’m trying to send my Updraft backups to an FTP server. The credentials works fine for other connection software but not for Updraft. I’ve talked with Network Solutions and they say they have nothing that would “block” incoming at their end.

Only message I get from Updraft when testing the connection is “FTP settings test result: Failure: we did not successfully log in with those credentials.”

It’s the exact same credentials I’m using in Dreamweaver that connects just fine. I also have the FTP account page open and can see the exact info.

What do I need to do to connect?

    Hi,

Please could you double check the username and password that you have entered in UpdraftPlus?

    Best Wishes,

You mean the FTP username and password? If so, it is correct. I can connect just fine via Dreamweaver with the exact same info.

    Hi,

It is possible that the connection to your FTP server is being blocked.

Please could you (or your hosts/server admin) check the outgoing firewall logs for the server, and check if this is the case?

I am not sure how to check that other than that I called Network Solutions where the FTP account is. I am a home-based office so firewall shouldn’t be an issue, right?

    Hi,

Is your site hosted on a localhost (i.e. hosted on your personal machine)?

When backing up with UpdraftPlus, the connection to FTP comes from the webserver where the website is hosted.

Hi, the site is hosted with GoDaddy but I want to send a backup to our account with Network Solutions. There shouldn’t be any issues connecting as far as I understand, so any idea if it might be an Updraft issue in itself?

    Hi,

Could you ask GoDaddy to check their logs to see if the connection is being blocked on their end?

Could you also save your FTP details, and then try a test backup (only the database should be sufficient)? This is likely to fail, but may give us more information on the error.

Please could you send us a copy of the backup log? The contents will be too long to post here directly, but you can use an online service such as Pastebin, and post the link here.

Hi, since it won’t let me connect the FTP log is short. I am copying it below, hope that’s OK.

Also, I would need to ask GoDaddy if anything at their end would prevent from connecting to ftp on a different host. I have no problem connecting from other sources with the same info.

    Hi,

The best thing to do is to make an attempt to make the FTP connection, and note the exact time. Then, give that detail, and your FTP username, to the FTP server administrator, and ask him to confirm from their logs why the FTP server did not permit login. If the refusal is coming back instantly, then it’s less likely to be a firewall, and more likely to be a deliberate refusal by the FTP server – and as such, the server admin is the person who can read the logs and tell you why.
