ftp issue when trying to update to 3.8.1

  • My website is petcosy.ie the theme is Simplo, I dont know which version of WP I’m using, I dont know where to look to find out…
    I have a number of problems because I am trying to learn to manage my own website which was originally set up by a web designer and she customised some of the theme code for me… I think I’ll get back to that on another thread…
    I decided to update to the most recent version of WP, I am being asked for my FTP details but then told they are incorrect, I have confirmed them but still told they are incorrect.
    Any idea what I can do about this?
    I would like to get onto 3.8.1 before I start trying to understand the editing issues I’m having…
    BTW in case it makes any difference, my host is Blacknight and I am on a shared apache server. I believe WP was manually installed instead of using the built-in version offered by Blacknight, the web designer said this was better because “we would have more control” (for customising I guess?)…
    I would very much appreciate any thoughts or even directions to other posts/info I should read etc
