FTP Plugin/Theme Install/Update Gives a Blank Page

I have been trying for a few days now to get the FTP install/update part of WordPress to work but has so far had no joy.

At the moment when I install a plugin and enter the ftp details then press submit I just get the WordPress admin menu on the left and the right side of the page where the normal FTP progress is displayed is blank. The page is still ‘loading’ and will continue to load until I stop the page load.

I have look through a number of articals and forum posts related to FTP problems and have tried everything suggested:

– Using different FTP hostname/ip and add port to the end
– FTP works locally within SSH with all host/ip combinations I have tried
– Different PHP versions – currently using 5.2.10
– – FTP is enabled in PHP along with curl
– File permissions are correct
– Tried with all PHP errors notification on and no errors that I could see related to the FTP part (I ignored errors that appeared on all pages like depreciated function use etc)

If anyone has any ideas as to what is wrong or suggestions for what I could try next it would be appreciated.
