• I use Filezilla for my ftp and to edit files I have them open in Notepad. Occasionally when I try to access the file again, after re-uploading, it won’t work and when I view it again all of the line breaks are gone. It doesn’t happen all the time or even most of the time and it seems really random. Does anyone know why this might happen, and if this would be a filezilla problem or a notepad problem? It’s really annoying. It just totally borked my index.php. ??

    Oh cool, edit is back!

  • I have used SmartFTP and Windows Explorer (just type in ftp://yourwebsiteaddress.com and then when the password and user name comes up, fill it in and you have a familiar file manager in front of you – it’s slow but works) for years. I had this happen with other FTP programs, including a highly promoted and well used one (unmentionable) which totally whacked out a bunch of my files. I don’t know anything about Filezilla, but this has been known to happen.

Make sure you save the files in a totally TEXT editor, but watch the size of the window when you are saving in Notepad. I’ve found that it likes to cut things off at the “margins” of the screen width, which causes havoc with some things, annoyances with others. So keep the window maximized or at least really wide.

And where is edit….here, edit, edit, edit….I haven’t seen it. Where did it go? Where did it go? Duh huh?

There it is…just goes to prove, the squealling wheel….

Are you overwriting the files? Overwriting files via FTP can lead to incomplete transfers. Delete the old file, then upload the new file.
