• I am using WP 4.8.5. I have been putting off updating it for ages because I’m supposed to backup the database first and I haven’t found ONE! @#$% page in the whole Net universe that answers this simple question: which folder do I drag in my FTP program to backup the database?

Sure, there are WP “backup” instructions all over the place from the WP Codex to 3rd party sites, each has a bajillion words about installing this backup WP plugin (just what I need, more malware targets) or running that PhPMyAdmin or cPanel (whatever those are). Or asking my WP hosting co about their backup routine (mine only has phone support with a 2 hour wait). Can someone please just say, which WP folder I need to drag to make a local FTP copy of the database? This should be so simple.

All of them. Copy all files and directories from the WP root. You’ll also need to download a copy of the database, which you’d do via PHPMYAMDMIN in your hosting control panel.
