Full name of author

I want my blog to disaply the full name of an author beside each post, rather than just the nickname. However, I can’t find any documentation on parameters to pass to the the_author(), or on any other way of changing the settings. Can anyone help?
(Please forgive me if this is an FAQ: I can’t find it in the documentation.)
