Function hook, custom fields or shortcode reference

I would like to ask or suggest, if there is some possiblity already or on way to add URL image link to post.
What came my mind are these possible waysto be easy to work with:
function hook – for custom WP app or plugin
custom field for post – key where the value would be URL
shortcode – for this particular plugin with value if URL
