Function to check if returning customer within new order email notification

My client would like the new order email notification she gets to indicate if the customer is a repeat (has ordered previously). I did a couple Google searches but couldn’t find anything. Can someone point me in the right direction?
The email template in question is “admin-new-order.php”.
