Hello @andbale
Thanks for reaching out to us, we’re here to help.
Do I have to keep the old plugin active in order for the PP standard subscriptions to renew, or WooCommerce PayPal Payments will handle them?
Firstly, there is no direct migration path for existing subscriptions created with PayPal Standard to the PayPal Payments plugin.
The subscriptions that were set up using PayPal Standard will continue to renew automatically. These renewals are managed directly on the PayPal platform and cannot be controlled by our plugin. To manage or cancel these existing subscriptions, you would need to do so directly through the PayPal website by canceling the Billing Agreements in place for those subscription payments.
Consequently, keeping the old PayPal Standard gateway active is not necessary for the renewals of these existing subscriptions.
For your future subscriptions, if you wish to use the PayPal Payments plugin, you should disable PayPal Standard on the checkout page and enable PayPal Payments. This means that all new subscriptions will now be handled by PayPal Payments simply because it will become the only available payment method for subscriptions.
Do I have to enable Reference Transactions in PayPal in order to enable automatic renewals with PayPal Payments?
It is indeed necessary if you are utilizing the Vaulting feature for subscriptions. However, there is an alternative in the form of PayPal Subscriptions mode. This mode allows you to use subscriptions without enabling Reference Transactions but comes with certain limitations. You can find a detailed list of these limitations and further information on how to set this up correctly in our subscriptions FAQ.
I hope this clarifies your concerns. Should you have any further questions or require additional assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Kind Regards,
Krystian
