We recently added a product search widget to a client’s website. The first thing the client did when we revealed the new feature was to search for a plural of one of their product types, which returned no results because the pluralized product name doesn’t appear anywhere in their catalog. I immediately thought of Relevanssi as a possible solution due to the ‘fuzzy matching’ capability, but I see that it doesn’t do plurals, only items that begin or end with the search term.

Is the ability to match plurals (i.e. ignore trailing ‘s’) something that might make it into Relevanssi at some point?

    To clarify, here’s an example:
    Product 1: Red Widget
    Product 2: Green Widget
    Search term: widgets
Result: no matches with built-in WordPress search or with Relevanssi :o(
Desired result: Product 1 and Product 2 in search results.

Searching for a plural like this seems like a natural thing for average users.

Relevanssi Premium does include a simple stemmer, which can be used to make Relevanssi understand plurals (and couple of other word forms).

If you’re technically minded, it’s not a particularly difficult feature to build yourself.

That looks promising, I will talk to our client about Relevanssi Premium.
