fuzzy search not working with non-english characters?

Lots of product decriptions on my site are in spanish and I need a flexible search function for this. I am glad that relevanssi is finding words like “mío” and “se?ores” correctly if the search term is matching perfectly. But these words should also be found by searching for “mio” and “senores”.
Tables are in UTF-8, and I switched on fuzzy search. It is explained that words are found matching the beginning and the end. Strange enough when searching for “mio” and “senores” both matching perfectly in the beginning and in the end, even with fuzzy search turned on, nothing is found.
But it would also be necessary to be able to find “último” by looking for “ultimo”.
Is there a way to get this behaviour?!
