    Hi!

Im reading the new guidlines for GA4. According to the docs (which are very confusing) it says that the new GA4 ecommerce events such as “add_to_cart”, “view item”, “item_ids” etc are automatically imported to Google Ads (as long as the analytics and ads account are linked) and used for dynamic retargeting. If I understand it right, these should replace the old triggers like “ecomm_pagetype” etc.

In the guidlines for gtm4 there is a section about setting up tags specifically for Ads retargeting.

My question is: Is there any purpose of setting up Google Ads tracking in Tag Manager if analytics is already sending that information with the new Ga4 events?

Thank you for a great plugin.

    Hi Steve,

I am sorry if the docs are confusing, I will do my best to change them if necessary to make them more clear for everyone.

According to the docs … it says that the new GA4 ecommerce events such as “add_to_cart”, “view item”, “item_ids” etc are automatically imported to Google Ads (as long as the analytics and ads account are linked)

Could you post a link where you read that?

If I understand it right, these should replace the old triggers like “ecomm_pagetype” etc.

The new way of setting up Google Ads dynamic remarketing replaces ecomm_* variables, yes.

    Hi Thomas.

Sorry for not being clear. Your documentation is not confusing, it’s very straight forward. I was referring to Googles own documentation about GA4.

They have a guide where it says that the GA4 retail verticals are now imported to Google Ads and used for dynamic retargeting. This would make the Google Ads Tag redundant as anayltics is now taking care of those events and syncing with Google Ads.

Upon reading everything again it says that this is not rolled out for websites yet, but for apps. But it will probably be the next step.

    You can find it here:
    https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/9313634?hl=en

So my question was, is it any purpose of setting up the Google Ads Tag in GTM since GA4 is now tracking everything for dynamic remarketing. But as it′s not rolled out for websites I guess its a question for the future.

    Thanks for the clarification!

Since we do not know the roadmap for this feature to be expanded to web streams as well, I would say your best option is currently to implement the Google Ads dynamic remarketing tag for better retargeting. Once the data import in GA4 to Google Ads is also taking care of web users, you might be able to remove the Google Ads tags.

    Hi Thomas!

A related question that i ran in to.
In Google Ads its possible to import conversions from GA4 or set up a Google Ads conversion tag. After reading the Google Ads Tag seems to collect more data and is recommended.

I cant find any guide related to the conversion tag with gtm4wp.

I have created a conversion under “conversions” in Google Ads and i can see that the conversion id is the same that is used for the retargeting tag. GTM4WP is already sending the purchase event to the retargeting tag with the same conversion id.

Will this be enough to start counting conversions or do i need to set up a separate tag in Tag mananger (Ads Conversion tag) and trigger that only on purchases? It seems that the conversion events also requires a conversion label.

    Thank you

    Hi,

All conversion and remarketing tag in Google Ads will use the same conversion ID as this is more like an account ID for Google Ads. Your specific conversion tag will however also include a conversion label which will make sure the data is stored in the right place within your ad account.

The remarketing pixel with the purchase data will not be included in your Conversion column, you need to create a conversion tag. Within the conversion tag there will be an order ID and value parameter that can be populated with information from the purchase event. You need to create a Data Layar Variable in GTM and use this variable name:

    ecommerce.value

… and another one whit this:

    ecommerce.transaction_id

Do not forget to fire this conversion tag on the purchase event itself and not on pageview.

Hi Thomas, thank you for being so helpful.

Yes im using your container for GA4 and i selected your variables {{Ecommerce Value}}, {{Ecommerce Transaction ID}} and {{Ecommerce Currency}} for the Ads Conversion tag values.

I′ve duplicated the “GA4 – Event – Ecommerce events” – trigger and removed all event names except for “purchase”. I use this duplicated trigger to trigger the Google ads conversion tag.

I think it was all that was needed, if im not missing something. It was super easy with your container. Maybe its something to add in the documentation in the future since the gtm4wp container has everything that was needed with 2 simple steps.

Thank you for a great plugin.
