Galleries with one image only don't display

Galleries containing just one image don’t generate a display. Tried with different galleries, same result. Yet when I add a second image to a ‘faulty’ gallery, it suddenly displays properly. Then, on removing the extra image and returning the gallery to one image, display again disappears.
Fascinating to find out what I am doing wrong.
