Gallery Creation Outside of Image Uploader

As the flash portion of the image uploader is broken (there’s a ton of support queries on this, so I’m not going to add to them), I’m wondering if anyone knows of a way to be able to use the [gallery] short-code for images that are not uploaded using the WordPress image uploader? Currently, the only way I know to use the [gallery] shortcode is to upload images to a post using the WordPress image uploader, exit out of the image uploader, then insert “[gallery]” into the post. Is there another way?!
