    Our Website: inplace dot com

It can only be seen when logged into our account, but the problem admin page is: /wp-admin/admin.php?page=ngg_display_settings

After a recent update of our WordPress version and all of our plugins, our NexGEN Gallery Settings page does not have the text labels it is supposed to have in the drop-down menus, after our NextGen Gallery plugin was updated from version 2.1.0 to version 2.2.12. Also, functionally, none of the settings respond any more to changing a radio button option or to adding numbers into any of the empty fields. See these screenshots:

    https://inplace.beta04.ascedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/text-labels-not-showing-and-settings-do-nothing-after-update.jpg

    https://inplace.beta04.ascedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/text-labels-not-showing-view2-NextGEN-Basic-Thumbnails-drop-down.jpg

This began when per our request, recently our developer had updated this plugin along with all our other plugins and updated our WordPress from 4.3.11 to 4.8.1.

This is where things get more complex and the 2nd problem comes into play:

    1) See this screenshot:
    https://inplace.beta04.ascedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/Picture-list-link-text-that-will-not-go-away.jpg

After the update, our developer had to add a CSS class that hides the [Show picture list] text– because the “hide” radio button on the Gallery Setting page, does not work for this any longer. This seems consistent with the fact that NONE of the settings adjustments seem to work in the Gallery Settings page any longer ever since the label text for the expanding menus (such as NextGEN Basic Thumbnails, NextGEN Basic Slideshow, etc.) disappeared after the 2.2.12 update.

    2) Since then, I updated the plugin from 2.2.12 to 2.2.14. I hoped that that this would perhaps refresh things and the Gallery Settings page would look and function normal again. This didn’t happen. Instead, due to the update process the “[Show picture list]” link came back.

So, I am trying to solve the following 2 issues:
    1) Fix display and functionality of the Gallery Settings page, get the label text back.
    2) Figure out how to “re-hide” the “[Show picture list]” link in the Customers box. Since it cost a lot of development time to get this hidden the first time, I was hoping to find a simple enough work-around so that I can do this myself. Perhaps a user style sheet that overrides the main plugin files?

    Thanks,
    Keith

I have since realized these should be entered as 2 separate issues. I will close this topic and start 2 new separate ones.

@1-krn – Yes, two separate issues might be best to address these problems although I suspect the issue will all work out to be from the same conflict.

Errors like this can sometimes occur due to a conflict on your site. I’d like to have you try a few things. Please try deactivating all of your plugins, clearing your browser cache (and site caches if you are using a caching plugin), then reactivating the NextGEN Gallery plugin(s)?

If this fixes the problem it was likely one of the deactivated plugins causing the issue. Now, retrace your steps activating each plugin (one at a time) and re-checking to see if the problem returns. If it does then that last activated plugin was probably the one. Keep reactivating the plugins as it is also best to keep checking after each plugin, sometimes there may be more than one plugin on a site that will create an issue. If you do find one (or more) plugins causing this problem we would greatly appreciate your feedback on them so the developers may address them as soon as they can.

Also to note, in rare cases, it may be the theme itself that is causing a conflict so while you have just the NextGEN plugin activated you might consider temporarily switching to one of the WordPress Twenty series themes and see if this corrects the issue as well.

If the problem still persists after all of this we would still want to know, even more so, as we will still want to sort out the issue and may need additional details.

    Thanks!

As instructed, I tried de-activating all plugins, and then re-activated only NextGEN Gallery. As I feared, this didn’t make any difference… the Gallery Settings page was still missing those text labels and not functioning right, even when NextGen Gallery was the only active plugin.

Then I re-activated each of the other plugins one by one, and NextGEN remained the same after each one (except for the JumpMobi plugin which was the last one I re-activated – a different page of NextGEN reacted to that, in a different way. This a separate minor issue, it seems to be unrelated, but I will opened a separate issue about this).

Interestingly enough though, I forgot to mention something else in my previous post:
Last month to test out updating to WordPress 4.8 and updating all of our plugins to the latest versions (including NextGEN Gallery), our developer used an older version of our Beta testing site that is about 2 years old: https://inplace.beta04.ascedia.com/.

Unlike our live site (www.inplace.com), the Gallery Settings page on our Beta site is not malfunctioning or missing any text labels: https://inplace.beta04.ascedia.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Gallery-Settings-Page-on-Beta-is-Normal.jpg

There doesn’t seem to be much different about the beta site that would cause the difference in behavior of the NextGEN Gallery other than it is older and has less various revisions than the live site. The live site has all the same active plugins as the beta site except for one – we replaced the Platinum SEO Pack plugin with the Yoast SEO plugin. Note the following conditions:

    1) The issues with the NextGEN Gallery Settings page had already been happening prior to deactivating the Platinum SEO Pack plugin and adding the Yoast plugin, anyway.

    2) The live site has also had some more recent plugin updates that the beta site doesn’t have, but again, the issues with NextGEN Gallery were already happening prior to this.

    3) I realize we may have not used ideal procedure in doing our site upgrades, in that the beta testing site was not equal to the live site, and the uprgrades were done separately, done on beta first and then repeated on live. So obviously something is different about the 2 iterations of the site which caused NextGEN Galley to update smoothly on the beta but not the live… but it is very difficult to pinpoint what that is.

Again, any further assistance anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Keith

    This is not resolved.

@1-krn – I did not read your results when you temporarily switched to a WordPress Twenty series theme and had only NextGEN Gallery active, did the problem persist still at that point?

    Thanks!

No, I had our normal theme active, not TwentyTen, when I had only NextGEN Gallery active.
But is it safe to (even just temporarily) switch our public live production site to a different theme to try this? Will all be the same when I switch back to our normal custom theme? I never did this before.

Yes unfortunately since our beta site does not have the problem, there is nothing to ‘test’ there first.

I guess we would have to pay someone, yet again, to make a copy of our live site as a separate staging site… if we didn’t want to test on live site first.

Thanks for the advice you have provided thus far.

@1-krn – Try this plugin for creating a staging site: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/wp-staging/

    Thanks!

PS: If your production theme is correct;y/well written temporarily switching to a default WordPress Twenty series theme should not create any issues.
