    In the new gallery block, there is an option to open de media file by clicking the thumbnail in the gallery.
    Is there a way, other then hit the back button in your browser, to close the media file and go back to the post / thhumnails i.e. by clicking on the image?

    In addition:
    – is it possible to navigate to next/prev image?
    – is it possible tot open an image (by clicking on the thumbnail in the gallery) in a new window?

    None of that is really controlled by the theme. What you’re seeing is how WordPress’s gallery block operates.

    To change that, you either need a plugin or to develop your own plugin.

    Thanks for your reply James,
    I used nexgen before, which is awesome. But the fewer plugins the better i.m.o. so I was thrilled that WP5 has a very nice gallery itself. Maybe this functionality will come in the future.
