• I am receiving my email test posts OK – they are being sent in plain text. However the major part of the email post is all the email headers and garbage as shown here –

  • Have you reviewed Post_to_your_blog_using_email?

    Hi Esmi,
Yes I did read it – and as I say it all seems to work OK – and I’m using plain text. I’m using the auto collect script which I pasted into the blog page. I have it at the bottom of the page outside the </HTML>

I assume from reading it that you can’t sent an image with the email – is that right?

It’s just that it sends all this garbage with the email – the subject of the email isn’t treated as the header for the blog either.

The example I show on the forum is just a plain text email – no attachments.
I’m going to have another go and send some more – then manually collect them and I’ll copy the mail.php collect response in case there is a clue there. Do you have any other thoughts?
I’m grateful for your continued assistance.

    Does this help at all?

    Thanks.

    Esmi,

I found this info. on a blog site – is this the answer?

“A brief interjection about email programs – in my testing, I had no problem sending posts via Eudora and Thunderbird, but Outlook Express interjected a great deal of extra code (including <font> tags, <div> tags, and garbage ‘=20′ text). Therefore I recommend NOT using that program”

If it is correct the I don’t know what to do about it – ?
    Thanks.

That was going to be my next question – what email client are you using? Have you tried using Thunderbird? It’s free and has all the features of OE (which is getting rather long in the tooth and was never a good mail client in the first place).

My grandaughter has AOL will this be OK – ? – not sure what her friends have got – so if say a lot of her friends have outlook express then I can this is going to be a problem.
Do you know if WPress are looking at this issue – Shouldn’t it be mentioned in the Codex ? I can’t be the only one with Outlook Express – ?
    Thanks for your continuing care.

Is this so she can post?

    Hi Esmi,
Have downloaded and using Thunderbird as you suggested – brilliant posts to Blog!! No problems at all.

Yes – the blog is going to be hers for her life and school, friends, holidays etc. (9 years old) I’ve sort of started it off with a small Me page so she can build this up.

So will she be able to use AOL OK – ???

I don’t understand the links side of the Blog yet as I wanted to sort out the images and email garbage. So I’ll study the links side now – I’m sure there is some Codex on it.

Have you any tips about security – I don’t want any problems for her (if you know what I mean)

    Thanks for your support.

So will she be able to use AOL OK – ???

Will she be posting via a browser? If so, which one?

In terms of security, have a look at Hardening_WordPress.

For her sake, I’d definitely recommend activating Akismet and getting a free API key for her via a wordpress.com account (you don’t need to create wordpress.com blog – just an account). Also install https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/cookies-for-comments/ That should cut any comment spam down to a bare minimum.

Database backups: I’d recommend https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/dbc-backup/ as it backups up the database unattended & automatically. Drop me a line via esmi[at]quirm.net and I can send you an add-on plugin that will email a copy of the zipped backup file to a nominated email address (yours, perhaps?).

That just leaves her uploaded images to backup/copy. Unless you want to invest in something like https://vaultpress.com/ I think the best way to approach this is to teach her to keep all of her uploaded images in a special folder on her computer. That way, she’ll have copies if anything did go seriously wrong.

Make sure that you have turned off registrations by unchecking “Anyone can register” in Settings -> General. You might also want to have a think about how to handle commenting generally.

Finally, consider just giving her Editor status with yourself as the only Admin for the time being. That should limit the amount of damage she can do by “fiddling with stuff”. ??

    Hi Esmi,
I did reply to this yesterday but it doesn’t seem to have posted.

She can email OK from AOL – do you know of garbage problems with AOL – ? Her mum has a fairly new laptop with I assume I.E. not sure of version though.

Have done all you advised with regard to security- thanks.

With regard to security – if I wanted to change my login name to a stronger one – is it a matter of just creating a new admin user with the login name etc of my choice and then deleting the other -?
Or can I change my name in the config file and just re-enter that as a new user and then delete my old?
What do you advise – ?
    Thanks as always.

do you know of garbage problems with AOL

No but then I’m not sure that I’ve dealt with anyone using AOL ??

You can create a new admin user and delete the original one. Or use https://w-shadow.com/blog/2008/07/24/change-admin-username-in-wordpress/
