• Looks easy, but it isn’t bc it doesn’t do what you freaking set it to do doesn’t take hold. Plus, it’s nowhere near user friendly. There’s more than one place to change the size of the thumbnails, for instance, and you can’t tell which it’s using. So you set the all the same. Doesn’t do you any good bc when you DO change the size — in multiple places — you still have to go to settings again and select the gallery you’ve painstakingly set up and do a bulk action remake the thumbnails on it, wait for that, THEN clear your cache and then load the page. Nope, changes aren’t there. I did this like 50 times. I thought well maybe I’ve sized these thumbnails too big, mathematically, and put them back at the default numbers. (Once I did get something to change – never could get it to go back to where it was. This is my complaint. It will NOT display 4 columns for me, for instance, will not change the thumbnail sizes, bigger or smaller, etc. SIGH. SO frustrating. The built-in gallery from WP has HUGE captions, which I hate. I like how NextGEN’s captions don’t show under the thumbnails, but show when you click an image. I GIVE UP.

  • I gave up trying to use NextGen. All they did was point me to the instructions – which are pretty useless when you are having these type of problems. I now have Nextcellent working.

@diane Thornton – We are aware of some inconsistencies in sizing taking effect, especially when using the NextGEN Legacy templates (we have addressed this in our next release).

Setting the number of columns is dependent on actually setting them in NextGEN Gallery and whether or not your theme will display them in the content area is has to work with, we actually recommend leaving that setting at the default so NextGEN Gallery can set the columns dynamically (and responsively).

As note above, there are templates that can be used to show the captions.

I’m sorry you had so much trouble working with NextGEN Gallery, we offer a great deal of documentation that may help in the future: https://www.nextgen-gallery.com/help/

@hmpk – Which specific documentation was not clear enough for you to follow? We are currently re-working all of our documentation and if there is an article that is unclear on a particular topic I can ask that it be moved to a higher priority to be reviewed and rewritten.

@photocrati(Cais) — you have saved me. I went to the help link and lo and behold, there was the answer I’d been looking for everywhere. I don’t know WHY, before, when I would change the thumbnail sizes it wouldn’t happen, maybe I was doing things out of order, changing the default, I don’t know, but it’s perfect now and I am extremely happy. It is doing exactly what I wanted it to do – small thumbnails with no caption showing, click on a thumbnail to see the caption, toggle through the larger pictures. YES. I am fine and happy now. Not sure how to change my 2-stars into 5, but I am telling you, this is what i wanted and I feel stupid I couldn’t see how to deal with it before.

I would suggest, if at all possible next update, that in the Visual window of the preview, you could have some icon for a nextgen gallery, name included, rather than the first image of a gallery. This will help when users are away from the initial setup for a while, to remember how to get to the particular gallery settings. Much appreciated that you guys responded to my kvetching. Plus, so quickly. Thanks!

If anyone knows how to change my rating, please post a reply. Photocrati – my apologies for screwing up your rating average.

@diane Thornton – Thank you very much for your update!

You should be able to go to the main WordPress NextGEN Gallery page at https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/nextgen-gallery/ and click on the appropriate “new” star rating you would like to give.

If you are not able to make that change, we would still like to thank you all the same for your intent. We appreciate you wanting to give us a better rating even more than the rating itself.

As to the idea of additional visual cues with the gallery preview image, we would be happy to read more of your thoughts and ideas on this here: https://www.nextgen-gallery.com/feature-voting/ … it sounds very interesting.

    Thanks, again!

@diane Thornton – Just following up on some old reviews.

Given that your original issue was resolved quite a while ago and given the other overall improvements in the plugin since your review, we’re wondering if you might now consider upgrading that rating :). If you are having any other issues, of course, please just let us know.

    Thanks. (Erick)
