    Hi everyone,

I’m just generally confused, I took over a website post.browndailyherald.com and I don’t really know where to start.

WordPress, all the plugins, etc need updating but it won’t let me update because it can’t create a directory. After reading a few posts a lot of people recommended using an FTP client, which I downloaded, but I can’t connect to the server.

Basically I’m lost right now and if someone could guide me to a great resource that would be great.

Digging Into WordPress is an excellent e-book:

If you can’t connect to your server you should double-check our FTP credentials – i.e. host name, login, password. FTP clients usually have an error log – you can also look there for clues. There is usually a message about the type of error occurring.

Most servers have switch where you try and connect to server with wrong user name and password on ftp or server for more then 5 times your IP address get blocked if this the case with you will to contact your host to unblock your IP address.

So this might be a really bad question but:

I can access the dashboard of my site if I log in through its url, but if I go to wordpress.com that same user/pass doesn’t work.

Is this normal? Should I be using the user/pass I currently have for the FTP client?

Oh ok you have wordpress.com then you need to go on wordpress.com forum as this self hosted www.ads-software.com

You can not use ftp with wordpress.com blog site you can only use what they have in admin panel.

    But I don’t understand, then why I can’t log in through wordpress.com?

This forum is for self-hosted WordPress sites. Please try asking your question on https://en.forums.wordpress.com/

Is your blog hosted on WordPress.com or some other host? There are two types of WordPress sites – they work totally differently. There are those hosted at WordPress.com and “self-hosted” blogs that have support via www.ads-software.com. They’re very separate and different. Which do you have?

I don’t even know that one, how do I check?

It has a unique url, but I don’t know if that means much.

If you are being prompted in your WordPress admin area to do plug-in updates etc. you must be on a self-hosted blog.

So what would make you want to go log in at WordPress.com? WordPress.com is only for blogs that are maintained and hosted by WordPress.com. You can choose from a limited range of themes and they handle all the updates for you. Pehhaps you have another blog hosted at WordPress.com – like maybe a personal blog? If so, that login has nothing to do with the Brown WordPress setup. They are separate.

Wonderful, that really cleared that up! thanks zoonini, you have been a real help this past hour.
