We are seeing the following in Google Search Console:

    Sitemap could not be read
    General HTTP error
    1 instance
We encountered an error while trying to access your Sitemap. Please ensure your Sitemap follows our guidelines and can be accessed at the location you provided and then resubmit.

    Sitemap URL: https://anielaparys.com/sitemap_index.xml
Validated with XML-sitemaps.com, no issues detected
    httpstatus.io status code 200

What could cause this error we’re seeing?

If it helps, we are seeing the following in Search Console:

    Sitemaps -> /sitemap_index.xml -> /asp-products-sitemap.xml

Sitemap can be read, but has errors
    Missing XML tag
    1 instance
This required tag is missing. Please add it and resubmit.
    Examples
    Line 3
    Parent tag:
    urlset
    Tag:
    url

How can we add the required tag it’s asking for?

    Hi @awesonja

We’re checking https://anielaparys.com/sitemap_index.xml and we do see it is loading as expected. We’re checking this sub-sitemap (https://anielaparys.com/asp-products-sitemap.xml) and it doesn’t seem to have any URLs loaded for this post type. Do you have any asp products that should be showing here?

Otherwise, if there are no valid asp products, we would recommend going to the SEO > Search Appearance > Content Types > and setting it to ‘not show in the search reuslts’, which will add a ‘noindex’ tag and remove it from the sitemap – https://yoast.com/help/how-to-customize-the-sitemap-index/#content

We then recommend that you remove and resubmit the sitemap – https://yoast.com/help/submit-sitemap-search-engines/#google-remove

    Hi!

I have te same error on for all my sitemaps, all their status are: “Could not get”, and when I check for more info it says: “General HTTP error”.

Last day with correct reading was on 8th of november. My sitemap base is https://www.xiaomi4mi.com/sitemap_index.xml

I have added all sitemaps described in base too, with same problem. Could anybody help me?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi again!

After restore Yoast plugin to version 17.3 my problem was solved. So, it seems to be a bug in 17.5 version.

We don’t have a bug reported yet in version 17.5. It might be a cache issue sometimes, could you please reupdate the plugin to the latest version, clear caches, and let Google Search Console fetch the sitemap and check the report after some time?

Resubmitting the sitemap might also help fix the issue.

    @suascat_wp

That is the first I have done, On 8th I installed version 17.5 from 17.3, always I update a plugin all caches are cleaned. When I check that sitemaps were failing I removed them and sent again with same error.

But after that day, sitemaps started failing until on 12th I restore again 17.3, also cleaned caches and resent sitemaps to google again.

After 24 hours it started working again. That is the reason because of I guess there is a bug on that version or caused by it.

If you need some more info please ask me.

We do know that there are also issues on the part of Google Search Console sometimes when it is unable to parse sitemaps or provide the updated status, so it’s possible it may be the case here.

Otherwise, if you still experience the issue on the latest version of Yoast SEO v17.5, please do create a new topic so we can respond and reply to you there on your own thread and concern.
