Genericons & a11y
-
Hi, I’m Jackie, & as some may know, I’m a member of the accessibility team. I’ve posted this to the theme author’s support forum as well, but w/the increasing use of icons to indicate things like menus, submenus, next & previous pages, etc., I’d like to see if anyone has some thoughts on the following.
I’m using Weaver Xtreme. It looks to me as though the author uses \f502 to indicate a clickable arrow for a menu. It’s not announced, at least on Apple IDevices–there’s just a blank spot between the home & banner, which, when clicked, opens a menu. Not ideal in *any* sense of the word. To expect every blind person to label these is unrealistic, & I don’t even know if that can be done in VO, i.e., I know buttons can be labeled, but I’m not at all sure about these genericons. Lest you think this is a problem w/only this theme, please understand that the icons for “next page”, “last page”, & “previous page” don’t read well using screenreaders, either.
Any thoughts, team?
