You can do that.
All you have to do is to create an entity page type:place with Latitude 49°47’16″N Longitude 1°17’39″E either as name or synonym of a name (if the coordinates are for a specific place), and then enter the same data as latitude and longitude properties in the metadata box of the entity page itself.
It really simple and you can them automatically map each type:place, with the point centered in the map, zoomed at the level you choose.

How can we define something as a synonym of a name (I’ve tried the sameAs field, but with no success)

When creating an entity page with WordLift, you can add a title/name to the page and if needed one or more aliases to trigger that entity page using alternative text.
In your case:
If the location Latitude 49°47’16″N Longitude 1°17’39″E is Mount Everest, you could name the page either Mount Everest or Latitude 49°47’16″N Longitude 1°17’39″E, or both, using one for the name and the other as an alias.
This way, this entity page will be triggered both if you use the coordinates on your text (Latitude 49°47’16″N Longitude 1°17’39″E) or the name (Mount Everest).

When you create the entity type:place you need to add the name of the entity, eventually a description and than the geo coordinates as shown here.

The name of the entity is used by the NLP to markup articles and pages – if the title (or a synonym of the entity) is “Latitude 49°47’16″N Longitude 1°17’39″E” every time you mention this string on your site WordLift will be able to mark up the entity and you will be able to add geomap with the [wl_geomap width=… height=…] shortcode.
