i needed a platform for some kind of a community project. It really isn’t a blog… let me elaborate.
Me and some other enthusiasts for classic racing bicycles met in a large german cycling forum (www.tour-magazin.de).
We do have a contest there every month that we call “classic bike of the month”. Members enter their bikes, then we vote.
To display all the entrants and the interesting stories behind them, we decided that a website more “static” than a volatile forum, where old articles tend to vanish, was needed. So we created “radklassiker.org” – first on Typo3, then quickly remade in WordPress.

The theme i created in Artisteer, a tool which i really highly recommend.

To keep the “bike of the month” contestants of the same month together, i create a single article for each bike. To avoid long loading times, the part of the article with the majority of pictures is behind a “more”-Tag. The posting date gets adjusted, for example the winner of May gets May 31, 2nd place May 30, and so on. This is to ensure the correct order on a “month”-page. All entrants of the same month also get the same category, so they can be grouped.

That way, all entrants of the same month can be displayed on the same page. Pictures are included using nextgen gallery. Other plugins i use are the wp-cumulus tag-cloud ad xlanguage for bilangual support, wich i am currently working on.

Over time, also a link collection, a download section and several larger articles were added.

  • You can try integrating it with bbPress, thats essentially a forum made by makers of WordPress itself so integration is easy and you can have communities too!

I already had the SimplePressForum implemented; after migrating the webpage to its final domain name it was fubar, so i redid it and didn’t find time to re-implement SPF again; but it will be there at some time.

Thanks for the tip, i will look into bbPress as well!
