get rid of "read more" button on magazine basic

I’m running Magazine Basic by C. Bavota. Using the excerpt for the front page, each of my posts is clipped and then a “read more” button appears below the post. However, I’d like to get rid of the button (too cluttered) in favor of the following look:

“my excerpt here blah blah >>>”
with the >>> as the link to read the full article.

I have found the read more code in the functions.php but am not sure how to edit it to achieve this goal. Or do I need to put it in the stylesheet? I know it’s possible because the website that inspired me to use this theme is set up this way. Very streamlined.
