Getting 2nd domain on 1and1 working…

  • WP installed on 1and1 server.

    1 domain, https://conormobrien.com, and 1 subdomain (www.) working fine.

    2nd domain, “blindsidefilm.com” transferred over from a different 1and1 account.

    Set up 2nd domain as CNAME for existing Blogger website, blindsidefilm.blogspot.com. Worked fine for top level domain and sub domain (https://www.blindside etc). This was just intended as a quick “transfer ownership and maintain presence on internet” stage.

    Now, want to stop using Blogger for Blindside, and build new version of site on my WP installation on 1and1.

    so:
    1. Left www. subdomain alone so that presence still on the internets.
    2. Created new directory/folder using Filezilla, now looks like this:

    Now, here is where i’m a little confused, and I want to be certain I understand everything before I forge ahead with WP Network or such:

    WP network – this would seem intended setup the BlindsideFilm.com domain as a SUB domain of conormobrien.com – eg blindsidefilm.conormobrien.com

    I want blindsidefilm.com as a totally separate SITE – e.g. not as a separate users blog on conormobrien.com.

    I’m worried that is there a conceptual gap i’m falling into, where I dont understand the proper workings of WP-network?

  • you’d set it up as a sub site first. then you’d use the domain mapping plugin to give it a full, different url.

    But if you’re setting up a network, you do not make folder on your server for the new blogs. they are virtual.

    If you just want to move the blogger blog to a new WP install, why not just… install a new setup of single wp?

    Ah – theres the concept gap.

    So, if I want a totally separate site, then create a new database and install WP on that, and go from there?

    I know this prob soudns very noobish and naivie, but I’m being very careful about making a mess of things on the server, or with my existing WP install.

    Thence the over-caution ??

    ps. I was stunned to see Donnacha O’Caoimh developed multisite- i went to school with his brother, and know his family very well. Havent seen in years!

    Yes. It won’t affect your existing install either.
