• I’ve been using WP-Hashcash Extended to cut down on the huge amounts of comment spam I get every day. I have the plugin set to delete likely spam comments. (I’ve never had the plugin identify something as spam that wasn’t, although occasionally it misses something that obviously is.)

Previously, when the plugin identified a comment as spam, the comment would go directly into the trash without sending an email notification. However, after upgrading to WordPress 4.4 earlier this week, I now get an email notification EVERY time a comment is received, even if the plugin has already deleted it.

This is driving me crazy because I’m suddenly getting 75 or more email notifications a day for spam comments that have already been automatically deleted. Those emails go to my phone, so my phone is constantly buzzing and picking out useful emails from the chaff is getting difficult.

I’m guessing that there’s been some kind of change to the order in which the core processes comment-related operations that the existing plugin doesn’t account for. However, it seems like WP-Hashcash Extended is no longer being supported. Are there any forks of it or different anti-spam plugins that perform the same function that I might try instead?
