We’re hosted on WP Engine and using Smart Plugin Manager. We’re getting the following error when the service attempts to update Simple History from 4.7.0 to 4.7.1:

    Website responded with PHP error

Please review the PHP error log. We will try again during the next run.

This error is a bit weird, because Simple History 4.7.1 does not include or mention any file or text Plus_Licences. 4.7.0 did however, but it was renamed in 4.7.1. It’s like the files have been only half-updated or that it’s caching some old code or something. 4.7.1 has been out a week now so if this was an error someone else should have mentioned it by know.

I will add a check in the next version of the plugin so it does not try to load service files that it can’t find. Sorry I can’t help further at the moment. Perhaps you could check with WP Engine if they have any clue what’s going on.

My organization uses the Smart Plugin Manager to automate updates for our website hosted by WP Engine, so we have also been receiving the same PHP error that causes WP Engine to cancel the Simple History update to 4.7.1.

Today, the message from WP Engine states it will cease attempts to update Simple History until a later version, “These updates are failing consistently during SPM runs and have been excluded by the system. Until a new version gets released, SPM won’t update them: Simple History 4.7.0 x 4.7.1.”

Thanks for the update @jsalis. I still can’t explain or understand why you get those messages. Anyway, I have released an update of the plugin that checks that a class exists before trying to instantiate it. Perhaps that solves something for you. Please give version 4.7.2 a try and let me know how it goes.

After one failed attempt during the weekend, WP Engine’s Smart Plugin Manager was able to automatically apply the latest update. Thanks for your assist in getting this resolved!
