Getting rid of Alttext on gallery thumbnails?

I have read another thread about “.ngg-gallery-thumbnail span” adding display none, or editing imageviewer.php and commenting out the H3 alttext etc but none of them work.

I can remove them one by one but on chrome there is still a small floating box.

Any help would be appreciated. thx!
