question: which template am I supposed to insert that code into? is it sidebar template, stylesheets, etc…? I couldn’t quite figure it out from reading the codex.

Where is it appearing that you don’t want it? My guess is the sidebar is what you’ll want to adjust…

Ok, in that third column is there a wp_list_pages call? Adjust that and see if that provides the solution you are looking for.
