• First of all, I don’t care to communicate with forums. It’s just a way fr the company, in this case, WordPress, to shield themselves from riff raff like me who aren’t A students in computerese. I was considering launching a blog on WordPress, but I can’t understand word one on the installation process. Let me illustrate:
    Installation: Famous 5-minute install

Unzip the package in an empty directory and upload everything. HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO UPLOAD
Open wp-admin/install.php in your browser. I HAVE NO SUCH ANIMAL IN THE ZIP FILE. AT THIS POINT, THE PROCESS GRINDS TO A HALT It will take you through the process to set up a wp-config.php file with your database connection details.
If for some reason this doesn’t work, don’t worry. It doesn’t work on all web hosts. Open up wp-config-sample.php with a text editor like WordPad or similar and fill in your database connection details.
Save the file as wp-config.php and upload it.
    Open wp-admin/install.php in your browser.

Too complicated for someone like me? I’d say so

  • Yes even i’m having problem with the same. I’m a newbie and want to make an website. But the installation process is really complicated. And am scratching my head for this since last two-three days and coming up with nothing other than getting demotivated. It would be really helpful for us if anybody can explain the steps properly.

    Thank you

That’s unfortunate as that’s the only support offered in these forums. ??

Have you considered a book such as WordPress for Dummies?

The author is one of the most respected people in the WordPress community. I’ve not bought it myself (I’ve a technical background) but I’ve heard only praise for that book.

Yes indeed anything, such as installing/configuring WordPress, can be difficult if you lack the proper experience to do it. And yes, being able to call someone or have someone over to guide you through the needed steps would be way better, in my mind, than a forum. But, that said, you still have options:

    1. Hire someone to help you
    2. Buy a book for beginners (such as the one Jan mentioned above)
    3. Reread https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Installing_WordPress and other similar WordPress installation guides. Google is your friend here!
    4. Watch some helpful videos such as the ones found here https://www.wp101.com/tutorials/how-to-install-wordpress/ and elsewhere

And there are most likely many other ways to get you up and running on a WordPress site. Heck, you could just go to https://wordpress.com, sign up for a FREE account, and have a WordPress site up and running in a few minutes. Of course, there would be certain limitations but you’d have a WordPress site. (see https://codex.www.ads-software.com/WordPress_vs_WordPress.com for more information on this subject).

I guess my main advice would be, if hiring someone isn’t an option for you at the moment, to get a book (or books), watch helpful videos, and then reread https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Installing_WordPress and other similar guides if necessary. I can almost bet, after all that, you’ll be in a better position to come to these forums with specific questions about specific problems you’re currently trying to overcome (i.e., one step at a time!). AND that is when forums like this really shine.

Good luck knitone10 and bigrambo and please know that most of us here on the forums, including myself, have walked in your shoes. ??

Thanks, Randy. Hopefully, I will get the hang of this

I built a site for my local history soc, on WP.com, which seems Ok. We wanted a dom name and third party hosting, so I ordered this from LiquidSix, who I’d previously used for html sites. So, I had to copy my .com site to the new host.

After good support from LS, I downloaded the export (database)file, edited wp-config.php, and uploaded WP files to the root. All I had, was all of the text, and images on pages & posts only. No media gallery, or contact form. I reloaded the same theme, uploaded images again from my computer, and FTP’d into WP win a plug-in. Time consuming.

    My questions are why:
    – doesn’t WP download images/media, when you create an export file?
    – don’t existing plug-ins & widgets come across?
    – aren’t all of the widgets used previously available?

I really wanted a website, not a hobby. Any help or advice appreciated.

    Trevor
