I want to completely rebuild my website and created a subdomain where I installed a clean WP-environment. Since theme Twenty-Three seems as good as any, I thought to try work from there. But I get overwhelmed by the options, possibilities etc. For example, after working some time with the customizer, I got a page layout, I more ore less like. But when I create a page, it doesn’t have any of the template’s look and feel.

But even more basic, aligning blocks, changing fonts (and do I change them for the entire site or only on this one location), changing the padding etc etc… It’s all a struggle.

Hence my question: what is a good read, video, URL to get all these basics explained?

  • Hi @auitje I understand what you mean, it can be much starting out with this theme. The Twenty Twenty-Three theme is a block-based theme that comes with a Site editor, you can go over the guides below to see how you can work with this theme:

But when I create a page, it doesn’t have any of the template’s look and feel.

You will need to assign the template you created to the page, you can do this while editing the page. Check the page settings on the right-side bar as shown below.

Clicking on the page template name will allow you to change the template the page is using.

Thanks for your pointers and answers, @thelmachido ! Will work from there. One additional question about linking a template to a page. When I open a page and click on the “Page” part that your arrow points to – I only have the option to select one of three templates (Standard Template // Blog // Blanco). However, when I browse through all Templates, I see many more (e.g. Home, 404, Index, Page, …) Since the “Home” template is the one that I spent some time on, I would like to be able to select that one for the Home page…

Do you have suggestions how to do this?

Hi @auitje the Home Page template is used to design content on your front page, you cannot assign this to any page.

Additionally, the 404 template is the one that is pulled out after something tries to search for something that is not available on your site. Below is an example of my 404 page. The idea is to be able to redesign how this page is displayed, something that wasn’t available in the past.

Check each template description under the template title, this will give you a better understanding of what the template is used for.

Since the “Home” template is the one that I spent some time on, I would like to be able to select that one for the Home page…

This would be the front page, for regular pages on your site I would suggest editing the Page template as this displays a single page.

Wow, thanks again. Indeed, when I preview and go to the home page (via the site logo), I see the Home page, indeed.

However… (I feel quite dumb, but cannot figure this out): I now have two actual pages in my page list and no separate page for Home.

However, the navigation menu on the home page shows three items, but for the Home page, it says: “Home (invalid)”. Maybe this is a residue from the page I created and named “Home” – the page which I removed, since I learned that the Home template is actually the Home page…

But how, then, do I get a valid “Home” menu item in this navigation list?

Again, thanks in advance for your help.

(Hmm, I tried to insert some images of the situation, but that seems impossible without having them uploaded somewhere with an URL…)

And another question related to the templates.

In the template list, there is a template “Single” (I guess, in Dutch it is called “Enkel”). I like that template, e.g. the featured image on top.

Now, when I look at my (imported) blogposts, they do not have that featured image on top, even though, in the settings, for Template it says “Single” (“Enkel”). If I click on that template name, I get a popup window (Template), where the name of the item is “Standard Template”, and in the dropdown below that, the only other option to choose from, is “Blank” (“Blanco” In Dutch).

I have no clue as to how I can get the “Single” template with its featured image applied to my blog post pages…

Help, as always, very much appreciated!

Maybe this is a residue from the page I created and named “Home” – the page which I removed, since I learned that the Home template is actually the Home page…

But how, then, do I get a valid “Home” menu item in this navigation list?

Hi @auitje you can edit the invalid “Home” menu item. Click on the menu item, once that is done you can use block settings to change the menu items Label and URL. You can add Home in the Label section and your site’s URL in the URL section. This should resolve the issue, I have made a short video below to help explain this.

It sounds like you have set where you want a post-featured image to be displayed for each post. The next step would be to add the featured image when you are editing a post, this will be the image that will be displayed on top.
The featured image can be added on the settings found on the right side of each post as shown below

Thanks again, @thelmachido! I tried to edit the links for the menu items like you showed in your video. The page menu, however, does still not include the item that links to the home page: https://vm-nieuw.verhalenmaker.nl/

On the Verhalen-page, I uploaded two images which make it even further incomprehensible for me. The top image shows how I tried to change the Home menu item – which however, still shows as “Home (invalid)” (Ongeldig, in Dutch).

And the other two menu items (to Verhalen and Contact) have nothing in the Link and Link Relation, however the *do* work and show correctly.

(I try to include the images here by the URL in Media, but that still does not work – “This image has an empty alt attribute”. Now, I could go and fill that as well, but for the purpose of only showing it here, that seems quite a hassle. They are included on the Verhalen page).

Hi, @auitje if editing the menu items didn’t work in that way you can try to do it as shown in this short video. You will be using the link option found on the block toolbar. Don’t forget to save the template when you have made the changes.

Alternatively, you can try to remove the invalid menu item to add a new menu item altogether.
