• Currently I am using yola.com to create and maintain my website. I’m thinking of switching to wordpress.

What do I have to do to have it look like my current site. Is it possible without getting into any coding?

Of particular note are the pages where I list my content in columns.

  • Hi, rmcellig

It’s good to see someone moving to WordPress. ??

You can begin here: What You Most Need to Know About WordPress & Learn How to Use WordPress

Your best bet is, if your host has a “one-click WordPress install”, then you could use this.
Then choose a theme from the WordPress Theme Directory (free themes) that satisfies your needs.
And then find some useful plugins (such as security, etc.) at the WordPress Plugin Directory

Thanks for getting back to me!!

Before I can use WordPress it has to be super easy to use and maintain for me. Yola is just that, I create a page with three columns, done. No coding. Maintaining it is easy as well.

I’m really hoping WordPress can do this for me. Are there any specific videos I should watch? I have been checking out some of them on youtube. My main concern is being able to set up pages in WordPress that look relatively the same in structure as what I have now on my current site.

You will notice that these pages have multiple columns and are centered on the page. I already have the code for these pages in text files so all I need to do is copy and paste the code into the column. The code I created is done using tables which I find easy to work with. One of my pages uses unordered lists.

i find it easy for me to create the table code in a text file and like I said just be able to copy/paste the code.

WordPress itself would not have a built-in fuction for this, but there are plugins which will allow you to do this. eVision Responsive Column Layout Shortcodes and WP Easy Columns.

With WordPress, things are not so much pre-arranged or layed-out, so some thinking and searching the themes and plugins would be necessary to get exactly what you want.

And remember, you aren’t stuck with one theme or plugin, you can always switch to something better or more suited.

The first thing I would advise, besides a theme, is to install a good security plugin. There are a few free ones, but these plugins have PRO versions which are well worth the cost if they keep your site from attacks and down-time.

And research hosts and hosting plans. Get something which suits your needs and doesn’t require alot of extra stuff just to work. Some hosts also have “one-click WordPress installs” which are good if you are just beginning.
