Hi @mikewashington thanks for getting in touch and providing details of the issue,

Make sure that permissions on your WordPress site’s directories are 755 and that the owner on your WordPress root directory (and all contained directories) is www-data. Web servers such as Apache, Nginx, etc will require www-data to be an owner so that WordPress and plugins can update and run functions required to do so.

Which plugin or feature with your host are you using to put the site in maintenance mode usually? Is this what is being triggered during plugin updates? Not exiting maintenance mode could mean the issue stops any other scripts from completing due to the permissions issue, including the instruction to bring the site out of maintenance mode if this is automated.

    Thanks,

    Peter.

@wfpeter Regarding your response, I normally update manually the plugins and Wp version update. I am just curious why it is triggered and stuck on maintenance mood after the release of Word fence new version every time.

    Hi @mikewashington,

I did receive your diagnostic but the only maintenance script I could find was a Drop-In WordPress plugin that was currently inactive. I also can’t find similar cases that match Wordfence updates leaving a site in maintenance mode when it is meant to automatically enter and leave when updates are performed.

I would certainly speak to your host as to whether this is a feature they enable to prevent site visitors during an update period. If it happens again and you believe Wordfence to be the cause, by all means send us supporting screenshots using a service such as Snipboard. I would also look out for other plugin updates triggering the same response that might rule Wordfence out as the sole cause.

    Thanks again,

    Peter.
