I just upgraded to WordPress 5.3 and I absolutely hate the red button text/outlines on the dashboard. The red makes the text and buttons significantly harder for me to read (it sure doesn’t pass any color contrast validation test!). It also keeps throwing me because I naturally associate red with errors.

How can I change that back? The admin theme settings in the User options obviously have no effect.

I don’t know who approved that change, but I can only assume they don’t even know how to spell “accessibility.”

Hm, a lot of work went into that: https://make.www.ads-software.com/core/2019/10/18/noteworthy-admin-css-changes-in-wordpress-5-3/ specifically to meet contrast requirements.

With that said, there should be absolutely no red. Here’s how buttons are styled now: https://cld.wthms.co/lGfdIL

This may be a plugin or theme conflict, as in one of their styles could be leaking into the admin. Please attempt to disable all plugins, and switch to the default Twenty Nineteen theme. If the problem goes away, enable them one by one to identify the source of the problem.

If you can install plugins, install Health Check. On the troubleshooting tab, you can click the button to disable all plugins and change the theme for you, while you’re still logged in, without affecting normal visitors to your site.

I tinkered with it, and I misspoke: The Admin Color Scheme settings in the User Profile DO change the colors of the editor buttons and other controls, giving me a choice of illegible color palettes.

The red color is NOT a plugin or theme conflict. It is the new color of editor buttons and other controls when the Midnight theme is selected. Switching to the default color scheme turns those buttons blue, which, with the standard font size and the removal of the box highlighting of the buttons, is ALSO significantly harder to read than the previous layout. Using the Coffee theme makes the buttons a light tan on a light gray background, which is EXTRAORDINARILY, unacceptably difficult to read.

(I use different Admin Color Schemes on my sites so that I can tell at a glance which dashboard I’m on. I’m going to have to stop using the Coffee theme entirely because this is illegible.)

You may allege that “a lot of work went into that” change, but I am an actual user declaring unequivocally that these color and design changes significantly impair my ability to manage my own sites. I am frankly furious — this is the exact opposite of accessibility.

So, to reframe my question: How can I change the Admin Theme Color selections so that I can choose colors I can actually read?

On closer examination, NONE of the available Admin Color Schemes in core offer a button text that is adequately legible with the new design. NONE. This is not accessible and is not acceptable; whatever working group put “a lot of work” into that change has failed pretty significantly.

I see that I’m not the only one who warned of this problem: https://core.trac.www.ads-software.com/ticket/48396

(The alternate color schemes not being “accessibility ready” is no excuse given that the default colors are also illegible.)

Meanwhile, there are plugins that style the admin differently.
